I got up this morning and I’ve had extreme gut pain since. I’d describe it best as some kind of stomach cramps. No matter how many times I go to the bathroom I still hurt.
I used to have this kind of pain all the time. Every morning was a new dice roll to see if I felt well enough to do anything that day.
It’s one of the things that made me hate going to sleep — especially if I was feeling well at night. Because there’s no way to predict whether I will wake up fine in the morning or in pain. I hated the way it made me totally unable to rely on myself — I’d never know if the next morning I’d be functional or not.
Lately this has not been a problem for me. I tend to have to go to the bathroom a lot every morning, which then settles down by afternoon. But it isn’t ongoing intense pain like this.
The temptation is to eat lots of “comforting” foods like cookies and wait for it to go away. But that probably isn’t going to actually help — and cookies probably are counterproductive. I don’t normally eat such things anymore.
So what can I do that is productive?
The first thing is to look at what’s been going on and try to figure out what instigated this.
There aren’t many parameters that have changed in my life recently that would be a trigger for this. I keep to a fairly strict diet in the sense that I don’t often stray from foods that are proven OK. So it’s easy enough for me to list the possibilities.
- I’ve been taking Benedryl near daily due to allergies as Spring shows up and there is a lot of pollen outside. I may have finally hit my limit for the number of days in a row that I can take it. That might be a sticky problem until the worst of the pollen is over. I’ve been taking Claritin every day as well — and despite that I still wind up so allergic that my eyes are often tearing. I think the drying-out effect of the Benedryl eventually does affect my guts and make them wonky.
- Yesterday I ate some pre-cooked barbeque chicken that I bought at the food store. There is always the possibility of a little food disagreement (even normal people get that). That’s the only food I ate yesterday that would be suspect. It is only suspect in the sense that I could have just gotten some bad piece of chicken — I know from past experience that this food does not bother me.
- I may have been exposed to someone with a cold or flu and this is just how my body is first reacting to it.
- It may just be a little evidence of an overload of stress going on in my life. All sorts of difficulties have been adding up with the most recent being that the bathroom in my room is not working. I can walk upstairs and use the bathroom upstairs, but that is a bit of a stressful hassle for someone who gets up several times throughout the night to go to the bathroom.
For now I’m going to just take it very easy today. Hopefully I’ll feel well enough to go for a walk later since it seems to be a nice sunny day. Figuring out what to do next will be dependent on whether I’m back to normal tomorrow morning or still in pain.
It’s days like this when I notice that I still don’t have a safety plan. It’s a good thing that I have a stock of food on hand so that I don’t have to go anywhere.
Productivity-wise, I wound up do a lot of work on this site today – so that was an accomplishment despite the pain.
